Bindapur potters colony, New Delhi

Bindapur, situated on the outskirts of Delhi is inhabited by 700 potter’s family completely dominating the economy of the place. The potters have mostly migrated from the neighboring states like Rajasthan which has the largest share of 75% and Harayana and few from the nearby state Uttar Pradesh. The excellence and refinity of the potters popularly known as kumbhars reflects their talent and sincerity towards the work. They produce different terracotta items varying from clay lamps to decorative household items. The clay is mostly imported from Kolkata. Every household is an expert potter.  The vessels, jars and other items are made on wheel and are sometimes hand molded. The colony can be viewed as an open air museum. Visitors, willing can also get an in hand experience on the wheel.
