Mizoram State Museum, Aizawl

The Mizoram State Museum was established in 1977 under the Department of Art & Culture, Government of Mizoram. The six-storey museum building has the following galleries: History gallery, Anthropology gallery, Ethnological gallery, Archaeology gallery, Zoological gallery, and Textile gallery.

The history gallery displays images, drawings, and artefacts that depict the historical development of the people and the land of Mizoram through photographs, paintings and artefacts. The gallery focuses on events such as World War II, headhunting, village administration, educational developments, literary growth, and more. The Anthropology gallery exhibits objects related to mankind, such as weaponry, headgear, and ornaments. This collection also features a few traditional house models. The Ethnological Gallery showcases the land’s tangible culture, including musical instruments, traditional fibre crafts, hunting equipment, domestic goods, and more.

The textile collection showcases the vivid weaving traditions and colourful traditional dress of the many Mizo ethnicities. The Archaeology section on the top floor exhibits a few stone artefacts with symbolic carvings and inscriptions. The Zoological Gallery displays the region’s diverse flora and wildlife.
