Khajuraho Birjapatti Tribe

The Birjapatti tribe resides in Khajuraho (Madhya Pradesh). They have been making pots, plate’s big barrels out of clay for a very long time.

Documented technique for making teracotta pots and vessels:

First, mud is brought from the bank of river, out of which a loaf is made and then by use of an oval shaped half cut plate they start making the object by putting a layer of mud one by one on top of each other. This process continues till the whole pot is done. After the structure and shape of the object is completed it is left out to dry in sunlight. Then cow dung loaf are burnt in a round furnace where it is smoked and the teracotta objects are placed inside the heated chamber where it get hardness and also turns black in colour.
While the object is made and is wet they design it with different floral minute motifs, geometrical patterns and other designs with the help of small iron wires.
The entire process of making the teracotta object gives it a metallic feel with hard surface and outer layer and also a kind of metallic sound can be felt by knocking the object.
