Mawlynnong, Meghalaya
Mawlynnong is a village located in the East Khasi Hills in Meghalaya acclaimed for its pristine beauty and cleanliness. Located about 90 kilometers from Shillong along the Indo-Bangladesh border, this village derives its name from the Khasi term “Mawlynnong” which means cavities on the rocks (caused by rainwater).
It is a small village with only 82 households as per 2011 data. Agriculture is the main occupation of the people and betel nut is the principal crop. This little village boasts of hundred percent literacy and almost everyone can speak Hindi and a smattering of English.
The cleanliness of the Village is worth mentioning. Dustbins made of bamboo, called Thapa (local name) can be found in every nook and corner of the village. The villagers collect all the garbage and put it in a pit and later use it as manure. With such a penchant for cleanliness among its residents, it is not surprising that Mawlynnong was adjudged Asia’s cleanest village in 2003 by Discover India magazine.
A commendable feature of Mawlynnong is that it maintains a perfect balance between heritage and modern amenities. The villagers have not sacrifed tradition to suit the demands of tourism. In fact, it can be seen as the perfect example of ecotourism. Enjoy a slice of Khasi life and stay in the bamboo guest houses made in traditional Khasi style. You can also stay with one of the village families and enjoy Khasi hospitality. Relish a hearty Khasi meal in one of the food stalls in the village.
Mawlynnong is a nature lover’s dream come true. The villagers have built a 80 feet tall Skywalk or Oberservatory made of bamboo which gives a panoramic view of the village. If luck favours, on a clear day, the Dawki border can be seen from the Skywalk. Take a stroll round the village and you will be surprised to find varieties of plants that you have read only in textbooks like the pitcher plant.
Another point of interest in Mawlynnong is the Natural Balancing Rock, a unique natural phenomenon where one small boulder balances a bigger boulder. It was worshipped by the villagers in pre-Christian times. Today, the villagers are mostly Christians. There is a lovely church in the village that accentuates the quaint beauty of the village.
While in Mawlynnong, do not miss the root bridge in the nearby village of Riwai. It finds a place in must do list of every tourist. A little away from the village is a waterfall located in a forest. It is quite a sight! Ask the local villagers for directions.
